Best Time To Visit The Masai Mara

18 June 2025 Expert Insight, Info Guides, News, Safari Planning, The Great Migration, Tips n Tricks, Uncategorised

The Masai Mara stands as a true jewel of the African landscape, captivating travellers from all corners of the globe. Its breathtaking scenery, the awe-inspiring great migration, and a remarkable array of luxury camps create an irresistible allure that draws thousands to Kenya each year. But amidst this splendour, one question lingers: When is the best time to visit the Masai Mara?

Safari in the Masai Mara

July to October for the Great Migration

One of the most sought-after times to visit the Masai Mara is from July to October, when the Great Migration moves through the region. During this incredible event, over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the plains and brave the Mara River in search of greener pastures—closely followed by predators. It’s one of nature’s most thrilling wildlife spectacles.

These dry-season months offer excellent visibility for game viewing, pleasant weather, and action-packed days. However, this is also peak tourist season, with higher rates and limited availability at top camps and lodges.

While the Great Migration is a highlight, remember that each season in the Masai Mara offers unique wildlife encounters, making it a destination worth visiting year-round.

Pro tip: Book at least 6 to 12 months in advance if you’re planning to visit during migration season—especially if you’re aiming for luxury camps with prime riverfront views.

June to October for Classic Dry Season Safaris

From June to October, the Masai Mara enters its long dry season—widely considered one of the best times to visit for consistent wildlife viewing. As vegetation thins out and animals gather around permanent water sources, spotting the Big Five becomes much easier. Expect dramatic sightings of lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos across the open savannah.

Clear, sunny days and cool evenings make for ideal safari conditions. Whether you’re tracking predators on a morning game drive or enjoying a golden-hour sundowner in the bush, this season delivers memorable encounters without the intense crowds of peak migration months.

Pro tip: Opt for a sundowner safari—wrap up your game drive with drinks, scenic views, and that unmistakable Masai Mara magic.

December to March for Calving Season and Birdwatching

December to March marks the calving season in the Masai Mara—a lush, green period following the short rains. The landscape comes alive with vibrant greenery, dramatic skies, and a surge of new life as wildebeest, antelope, and other herbivores give birth. It’s a prime time for witnessing predator-prey interactions and capturing touching moments of newborn animals taking their first steps.

This season also offers fantastic birdwatching, with over 450 recorded species and the arrival of migratory birds adding colour and sound to the Mara’s already rich ecosystem. While it’s outside the peak migration window, wildlife sightings remain plentiful and the crowds are fewer—making it ideal for photographers, birders, and those seeking a more serene safari.

Pro tip: Head out on early morning game drives for the best chance to see both predators on the move and birds at their most active.

April to May for Green Season Serenity

April and May bring the long rains to the Masai Mara, creating what’s known as the Green Season. While this period sees fewer visitors due to occasional muddy roads and heavier showers, it offers a more peaceful, affordable safari experience. The landscape transforms into a lush, emerald paradise—perfect for photography, with dramatic skies and vibrant colors at every turn.

Wildlife viewing remains rewarding, with big cats, elephants, and plains game still present—just without the crowds. Birdlife is also abundant, and many camps offer excellent low-season rates, making this a great time for budget-conscious travelers who value tranquility and nature at its rawest.

Pro tip: Pack waterproof gear and a sense of adventure—the Green Season rewards those willing to explore off the beaten path.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara? It Depends on You

The truth is, the best time to visit the Masai Mara depends entirely on what you want from your safari. Each season reveals a different side of this iconic landscape—from the high drama of the Great Migration to the lush beauty and solitude of the Green Season.

Whether you’re drawn to predator action during the dry months, the peaceful atmosphere of the low season, or the vibrant life of calving and birdwatching in the early year, the Masai Mara delivers unforgettable experiences year-round.

Plan your visit based on your safari priorities, and you’ll be rewarded with rich wildlife sightings, breathtaking scenery, and moments that stay with you long after the journey ends.

So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to discover the magic of the Masai Mara—on your own terms.

Why Are Safaris So Expensive?

9 December 2024 Expert Insight, Featured, News, Safari Planning, Uncategorised

As a tour operator, one of the most common questions we get is: “Why are safaris so expensive?” A better question might be, “Why are safaris more expensive than other vacations?” Let’s break it down.

The History of Safaris

The word “safari” comes from Swahili and means “journey.” Safaris began in the 19th century when European and Arab explorers ventured into Africa, initially for geographical discovery and later for big-game hunting. Over time, safaris evolved into wildlife photography and game-viewing experiences, especially as conservation efforts took center stage. Today, most safaris focus on appreciating Africa’s incredible biodiversity while respecting its ecosystems.

What goes into a Safari?

The typical African Safari is composed of accommodation, transportation, Park Fees/ conservation fees, guiding fees, tips and gratuities and international travel. We will go through each of these factors to understand why Safaris and travel to sub-Saharan Africa are generally more expensive than travel elsewhere in the world.

What Makes a Safari Costly?

Several factors contribute to the cost of an African safari, including accommodation, transportation, park fees, and international travel. Here’s why each adds up:

  1. Accommodation Safari lodges and camps are usually small and located in remote areas, unlike large resorts in destinations like Thailand or Egypt. For example, even larger lodges like Mara Sopa Lodge in Kenya’s Masai Mara have only 99 rooms. Running these remote properties is logistically complex and expensive, which reflects in the nightly rates.
  2. Transportation Safari transport typically involves custom-built jeeps for game drives and domestic flights. In Kenya, hiring a safari jeep costs about $300 per day, and internal flights (e.g., Nairobi to the Masai Mara) can cost $330 for just 225 km. Transport alone can account for 25% of your safari expenses, significantly more than other global travel destinations.
  3. Park and Conservation Fees Africa’s vast wildlife reserves, like Kenya’s Tsavo National Park (13,747 km²), require substantial funding for protection. Visitors pay daily fees that directly support conservation efforts. For example, a gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person, while entry to Kenya’s Masai Mara during the Great Migration is $200 per day.
  4. International Travel Flights to Africa are among the most expensive worldwide due to limited infrastructure, high taxes, and low competition. Expect round-trip fares to range between $1,000–$2,000, depending on the season and destination.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. While safaris are pricier than other vacations, they offer unparalleled, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The breathtaking landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, and warm hospitality create a deeply fulfilling adventure. Proper planning and budgeting can ensure you get the most out of your journey.

From the moment I landed in Lamu, the warmth of Kenyan hospitality was evident. A friendly Manda Bay Lodge representative met me at the airport, whisked away my luggage, and escorted me and other guests to the dock. There, a speedboat awaited.

Our captain skillfully navigated the maze of mangrove channels. Within just 30 minutes, the breathtaking silhouette of Manda Island appeared on the horizon.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Mwezi, the lodge manager. She led us to the main lounge for a refreshing drink as we completed a smooth and quick check-in. Right away, the sense of tranquility and exclusivity was palpable—this was no ordinary island retreat.

Luxurious Beachfront Living

I stayed in Room 9, a spacious beachfront suite with panoramic ocean views. The room’s open design, featuring locally crafted furniture, allowed the sea breeze to flow through—eliminating any need for air conditioning.

Waking up to the sun rising over the ocean was magical. Each morning, I made it a ritual to sip coffee on my private patio while listening to the gentle waves.

One standout feature was the swing daybed—perfect for lazy afternoons. Nearby, beach loungers and a cozy seating area offered ideal spots to relax. With high tide arriving each morning, I couldn’t resist a refreshing swim to start the day.

Culinary Delights and Personalized Service

Dining at Manda Bay Lodge is a true sensory journey. Each meal features fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared with care. Whether you’re a seafood lover, vegetarian, or have specific dietary needs, the talented chefs tailor every plate.

I enjoyed a late lunch in the breezy dining area overlooking the beach. Each bite felt elevated by the soft rhythm of the waves.

Yet, what truly sets Manda Bay apart is its commitment to personalized service. From the moment you arrive, you feel like part of the family. Mwezi and her team consistently go above and beyond, anticipating your needs and ensuring every moment feels special.

Endless Adventure and Relaxation

For those craving adventure, Manda Bay Lodge offers a wide range of watersports—all included in your stay. I tried paddle boarding and kayaking in the calm, clear waters. Sailing and windsurfing are also available for guests eager to explore further.

If you’re feeling bold, you can opt for deep-sea fishing or motorized watersports at an extra cost.

One of the highlights of my visit was a guided game drive on the lodge’s private conservancy. I encountered Dik Dik, Bushbuck, and even Buffalo. The experience also included a visit to the ruins of Ancient Manda Town—a fascinating glimpse into the island’s storied past. It all ended with a sundowner on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the island and ocean.

What to expect on a Driving Safari

Undoubtedly driving safaris is what most people on safari will experience. A driving safari is one of the best ways to experience the country holistically. You are usually accompanied by at least one driver-guide who will show you not only the wildlife but also the people, places and experiences of your safari destination.

  • See more of the country – by driving through the cities, villages and landscapes that are not part of the reserves and conservancies you will see more of the country and gain a deeper understanding of the culture and experiences of the locals.
  • Save Money – The typical Landcruiser safari jeep can hold around 6 guests meaning the cost is much cheaper than individual seats on a flight which can cots hundreds of dollars per person.
  • Travel at your pace – By having exclusive use to your own private jeep and guide you can schedule game drives for when and how long you like. You can also travel with your kids without the worry of disrupting other guests.
  • Reduce your environmental impact – although most jeeps are powered by fuel the emissions involved are still lower than emissions produced by flying on chartered or scheduled flights.

Cons to a Driving Safari vs Flying Safari

  • Long travel time – you will spend more time on the road due to long distances and poor roads. The driving time from Nairobi to the Masai Mara is 5 hours+ while a flight takes around an hour.
  • Uncomfortable rides – expect some bumpy roads that might not be the best for older travellers are those with joint problems.
  • Less time on safari – you will spend a lot of time travelling on the road. Meaning less time on game drives. Keep this in mind especially if you are on safari for a short time or only visiting one destination.

What to expect on a Flying Safari

Flying Safaris are a great choice for those with limited time and problems with travelling long distances. Flying is usually always included in most Luxury Safaris. It’s a way to ensure maximum comfort and offers an overall more premium experience. By flying you get to beat the traffic as well as enjoy scenic views of the beautiful African landscapes.

Pros to a Flying Safari vs Driving Safari

  • More time on Safari – By flying you shorten your travel time between destinations therefore maximising on time in the wild. The drive from Nairobi to Samburu is up to 6 Hours while a flight is around 1 Hour.
  • Scenic experience – flights over the country will give you a birds-eye view. You will get to see the dramatic landscapes that a reminiscent of scenes from cult favourites like Out of Africa
  • Quick connections – by choosing a flying safari you can get started on the day you arrive in the country with the latest flights leaving major cities before the sunset.

Cons to a Flying Safari vs Driving Safari

  • Lots of turbulence – Most Safari flights use small Cessna type planes. This can be a traumatic experience for people with a fear of flying or flying sickness.
  • Tight luggage restrictions – Due to the small planes used baggage requirements are strict. Most only allow 15Kgs (33 Lbs) of luggage in soft-sided bags.
  • More expensive – flying safaris can be more expensive. Especially if travelling to multiple destinations, however it can be more cost-effective for couples or solo travellers.

What’s the best option?

The best choice is ultimately based on what is important to you. Do you want to maximise time on safari and reduce travel time? then flying is your best choice. Do you prefer a more affordable and local experience? then a driving safari is best for you. When Is the Best Time for 2025 Great Migration Safaris?

The Great Migration is a year-round spectacle that follows a continuous cycle between Kenya and Tanzania. Over 1.2 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra move through a vast 800 km (500-mile) migratory route.

However, the most dramatic action—when herds cross the Mara River into Kenya—typically begins in July. The best months to witness these crossings in the Masai Mara are August, September, and October, when the animals move in large numbers and predator activity peaks.

Where to Stay for 2025 Great Migration Safaris

For front-row access to the migration, the Masai Mara National Reserve and Mara Triangle offer the best locations. Camps within these regions place you right in the heart of the action. In fact, some lodges located along the Mara and Talek rivers give guests front-seat views of the crossings—sometimes right from the comfort of your tent.

If you’re looking to be close to the river crossings and have seamless access to prime wildlife viewing areas, these locations are your best bet.

If your looking for the perfect hotels for large groups of 25+ travellers. We can reccommend Sarova Mara Game Camp, Mara Serena Safari Lodge and &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Camp for great service and good quality accommodation.

If you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly way to view the amazing wildlife of the Masai Mara, Horseback riding was named one of National Geographic’s top travel experiences in 2024
