The other-worldly, black, layering Shetani Lava Flows, named after the devil, spreads over the savannah. Other incredible natural attractions include the awe-inspiring Chaimu Crater; the Roaring Rocks, offering panoramic views; and the gorgeous Mzima Springs, the main source of water for the Tsavo River. Animal lovers will enjoy the chance to see highly endangered black rhinos at the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, and a list of other animals in the park including large herds of elephants, common waterbuck, eland, buffalo, gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, impala, and Maasai giraffe.

Visitors can also enjoy spotting over 900 elephants, a variety of predators, and over 450 bird species. The ancient culture of the Samburu people is still alive here, and it is possible to see two unique customs firsthand. In the first, watch as herds of cattle respond to each man’s individual voice as they call. In the second, see the tribesmen perform incredible dances that go back hundreds of years.

The Masai Mara together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s most famous wildlife park, the Masai Mara National Reserve. The image of acacia trees dotting endless grass plains epitomises Africa for many, then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The undeniable highlight of the Masai Mara National Reserve is undoubtedly the annual wildebeest migration traversing the vast plains of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. It is known as the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. Large prides of lions, herds of elephants, as well as giraffes, gazelles and eland can also be spotted in the reserve. Aside from horse riding safaris and traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Mara plains has become almost essential.

Where you will stay: andBeyond Bateleur Camp

Situated below the location of where Out of Africa’s famous final scene was filmed, this romantic and private camp reflects the ambience of Kenyan safaris of the 20’s and 30’s. andBeyond Bateleur Camp, the epitome of tented luxury, is comprised of just two intimate camps of nine Luxury Tents each, set among a forest of the Masai Mara. The Luxury Tents have a classic elegance with polished wooden floors and beautiful ensuite bathrooms, each with its own deck overlooking the vast game-filled plains of the Masai Mara, and a personal butler will ensure every need is catered for.

Delicious meals are served in the main guest area or in a memorable setting beneath the stars, followed by fireside port and cigars. Bush breakfasts and romantic sundowners on the edge of the Rift Valley offer an unforgettable African experience.

Appreciate a more exclusive piece of the Mara where you can explore in a vehicle, by foot, by day or by night. In the company of a safari guide, observe sights and sounds of the bush, while using your complimentary SWAROVSKI OPTIK binoculars for the duration of your stay.
